How Many Steps in a Mile: Steps to Miles Calculator

There are about 2,300 steps in a mile at a 3 mph walking pace, and anywhere from about 1,960 to 2,725 between 4.1 and 2.4 mph. Faster walkers take longer steps, so they need fewer per mile. The calculator converts steps to miles or kilometers and back at your pace, or with your own measured step.

Estimate

10,000 steps ≈ 4.35 miles (7 km)

At 2,300 steps per mile — a step of about 27.5 in (70 cm).

How it works

Steps per mile = steps per minute × 60 ÷ speed in mph, using steps per minute measured on a treadmill at each speed (between measured speeds, a straight line). With your own step, steps per mile = 63,360 inches ÷ your step length. To measure it, walk 10 normal steps, measure the distance and divide by 10.

How many steps in a mile, by walking pace

The calculator uses measured data, not a guess from your height. A 2011 review by Tudor-Locke and colleagues collected treadmill studies that counted steps per minute at set speeds. From one of those studies:

Speed Steps per minute Steps in a mile Step length
2.4 mph 109 about 2,725 about 23.3 in
3.0 mph 115 about 2,300 about 27.5 in
3.5 mph 124 about 2,126 about 29.8 in
4.1 mph 134 about 1,961 about 32.3 in

How the calculator works

The pace menu offers only the four measured speeds. The calculator doesn't invent a speed nobody measured.

Every default is listed under the result, with a link to its source.

How to read your result

The result is an estimate for a steady walk at one pace. Real days aren't steady. You walk slower in the kitchen and faster to catch the bus, so your phone's distance and ours will differ a bit. Your phone, your watch and a treadmill's belt will all disagree with each other too, and that's normal.

If the numbers matter to you, measure your own step once and use it. That beats any table, ours included.

Step count: in 2023 my phone said I'd walked about 1,100 steps in a full workday. At 3 mph that's about half a mile, from 9 to 5. I started taking calls standing, then walking laps of the upstairs hallway. Margo noticed from the kitchen before my phone did. The floorboards know.

Walking more at home

The CDC's guideline for adults is 150 minutes of moderate activity a week, such as brisk walking, and it can be split into short walks. Steps are just an easy way to count them. Check with your doctor before starting a new exercise routine.

Keep walking.

Questions people ask

How many steps are in a mile?

It depends on your pace. In the treadmill data the calculator uses, a mile took about 2,725 steps at 2.4 mph, about 2,300 at 3.0 mph, about 2,126 at 3.5 mph and about 1,961 at 4.1 mph. With your own step length, it's 63,360 inches divided by your step in inches.

How many miles is 10,000 steps?

About 4.3 miles at a 3 mph pace, where a mile takes about 2,300 steps. At a slower 2.4 mph it's about 3.7 miles, and at 4.1 mph about 5.1 miles. In kilometers that's about 7 km at 3 mph.

How many steps a day should I walk?

There's no single number for everyone. A 2011 review in the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity reports that healthy adults typically take between 4,000 and 18,000 steps a day and calls 10,000 a day reasonable for that group. The CDC's guideline for adults is in minutes: 150 minutes a week of moderate activity, such as brisk walking. Check with your doctor before starting a new exercise routine.

How do I walk 10,000 steps at home?

Break it up. Walk while you're on the phone, take a lap of the house every hour, use the stairs on purpose and add a short walk after meals. A walking pad under a desk lets you walk slowly while you work, as long as you stay within the maker's weight limit and use the safety key if it has one.

How do I measure my step length?

Walk 10 normal steps from a marked start, measure from the start line to the same point on your foot where you stopped and divide by 10. Do it twice and average the two. Enter the result in inches or centimeters in the calculator.

How many steps is a kilometer?

About 1,430 at a 3 mph pace, since a mile is 1.609344 km and takes about 2,300 steps at that pace. Pick the kilometers mode in the calculator for your own pace or step.
